How to be a better writer

So I took a 7 year break from writing and now I’m back, I want to be even better.

As you know I am blogging and writing and publishing eBooks.

So I’m re-learning. Before I had so many ideas for writing,, I couldn’t stop. I burnt out after a 7 year journey. Now after a break and realising actually writing is my life. I have set boundaries so I don’t get burnt out again.

For example, I still do other things I love such as watching TV and I have a range of hobbies. You can read about my hobbies on my hobbies blog: https://melanietoyeshobbies.blogspot.com/?m=1.

I try and just write for a couple of hours a fortnight and then I take a break. I have a week off writing. I do however spend that week promoting on my social media to keep building an audience.

An audience is important it can either help you stay motivated to keep writing or it can make you stop altogether if no one is reading anything you are writing.

Unfortunately I deleted my Facebook fan base from 7 years ago, so I have lost a decent amount of readership. Luckily I now solely promote on LinkedIn and Pinterest and continue to grow these accounts.

So it’s all about finding balance. Also, as I get ideas I write them down but I don’t always have the time to immediately implement them. And since I have about 4-5 active blogs, I have to find them to update all of them.

So I mentioned growing and learning up above. As I was editing my historical romance novel, I realised I couldn’t remember some of the grammar I learnt nearly a decade ago. But I didn’t just need a refresher, I needed to learn as much as possible on the subject. So I enrolled in the Australian Writers Centre - fiction writing - grammar and punctuation course.

Now while editing my novel, I feel a lot better about my grammar than just somewhat guessing when I started to look at it again.

There are definitely many ways to learn, sometimes it’s a quick google search for your country’s grammar on a specific grammar rule.

Sometimes it’s an in depth course on the topic to get as much knowledge on it as possible.

Sometimes it’s about looking into other resources such as books on the subject to help out with broader writing or follow other writers through their blogs.

There are many ways and opportunities to grow, it’s just about making some time (who has any) to do it.

Even just thirty minutes to an hour a week on growth in writing, will help you excel.

Enjoy your writing journey!
