The process of writing

Personally, I have very specific ways I write and it changes for different types of writing.

For example, for blog writing, I actually type directly into my phone into the blog post. I do have a laptop but I rarely use it for blog writing. Blog writing for me should be somewhat quick and can be written wherever I am. But I mostly write when I am at home. Even so, I still type directly into my mobile. I even include the pictures directly to my mobile in the blog post.

Blog writing should be easy, quick and fun.

Writing books, I write in pen in a book. This may seem strange but my very first novel, I wrote it using my PC and then the computer crashed and I nearly gave up on writing there and then. But I had a lovely friend who told me, it doesn’t matter what you lost. Make your book better than the first. So I did!

And ever since then I choose to write my first draft hand written in a book. So it doesn’t get lost. But I also found recently that I feel more creative holding a pen to paper than typing it out. It just feels more natural and creative this way. I also don’t have to lug around a laptop with me wherever I go.

So how do I get my books published?

I type my books into my laptop and then edit to what feels like a thousand times but probably is about 3-4 times. I create the cover image (most times or pay a graphic designer) and then format to publish it. I use the eBook publish style guide at Smashwords, which gives a comprehensive guide on how to format your eBook.

It all sounds like a pretty speedy process but isn’t really. It probably takes a year to publish a standard size novel from start to finish.

There is no right or wrong way to write, you do what feels like magic to you. Honestly, writing a book directly on a laptop would be quicker. Because we tend to type quicker than write but also, you would remove 2 full steps in the process, such as writing it down with pen to then typing it all up on your laptop.

Please comment below what works for you.
